WAYNE "Biggie" HOFFMAN (continued)So next day we met Marty and his guide for lunch before we went back to the "spot". No moose. Paul called once and I heard the bull burp about 200 yards down the hill. We happened to be standing in the road and since the moose walk the roads alot, I got off into the bush WITH MY SWAMP ROOTER RECURVE MADE BY JOEY BUCHANAN and Paul moved up the road about 50 yards and started calling. I could hear the bull coming closer but he hung up. Paul later told me that it crossed the trail about 200 yards down from where we were. He could see down the trail, I couldn't. He sounded hung up to me and I looked back at Paul and saw him running towards the truck! WTH is going on? He grabs a black jacket and puts it on. He runs down the road towards me and I read his lips, "I'm going to let him see me". He got down to where he could see around the corner and called once. Immediately the bull burped and I could tell he was coming. Paul started back up the road slowly, calling every few steps. When he got back into his original position, I could see him frantically trying to signel me to nock an arrow ON MY SWAMP ROOTER RECURVE MADE BY JOEY BUCHANAN. I figgered this would be a good chance to screw with him so I purposely DIDN'T nock an arrow. Hah! I could hear the bull closing the distance and knew he would pop out around the bushes in a few more seconds. I had to turn my back to him so I could shoot off my left side. I heard the burp that was the last one I'd hear before I saw him and nocked an arrow ON MY SWAMP ROOTER RECURVE MADE BY JOEY BUCHANAN. As soon as I placed my fingers on the string, I saw him. JEEZUS! those things are BIG! I couldn't have been any more surprised if a zebra had walked out! He stopped short about 20 yards and was looking for his "cow". Paul took the hint and started moving up thru the bush cracking sticks and limbs. About this time, I could see the bull got a whiff of the cow pee we had sprayed around, between that and the visual, he started walking. Head rocking and a burp with each step.He stopped again perfectly broadside, 12 yards, but there were a few leaves in the way. I knew they wouldn't hinder the shot and I remember pulling an inch or two past my normal anchor hoping to at least sink in up to the feathers. There was no doubt that the SWAMP ROOTER RECURVE MADE BY JOEY BUCHANAN, would do the job. The arrow zipped thru him so fast, the guide told me afterwards he'd thought I'd mmmmmmmissed. Hah! says I. The bull turned and walked back a few steps and stopped again. I considered another arrow but I knew I'd drilled him so I didn't want to spook him at all. Paul was calling still, trying to keep him there. I was looking hard for blood on his side but there was none. That's about the time a fella starts second guessing himself I guess but about that very second he coughed and I saw blood squirt out both sides 8-) We called Marty and his guide Jim and waited for them to arrive before we started the track. Marty's my bestest bud and I wanted him there when we walked up to the bull. |
